Abstract
This paper presents a brief description of the benefits the upgraded Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards System (NMMSS) will provide its users. The NMMSS is being upgraded under the leadership of the DOE Office of Plutonium, Uranium and Special Materials Inventory (SO-62). NMMSS is an important information resource for the US government in meeting its domestic and international safeguards requirements and in providing information needs for non-safeguards management of very valuable nuclear materials assets. The upgrade includes a redesign of the existing system to meet current user needs and the move to an Oracle 8i database to replace the Microsoft FoxPro software that has been used by the NMMSS since September 1995. The design changes and enhancements will enable the upgraded NMMSS to be more responsive to important new materials accounting needs and data requests for both current and historical information. The design, development and testing efforts are being conducted in accordance with the DOE Software Engineering Methodology (SEM). The paper will present a status report on the development efforts, an overview of the new system design and an outline of scheduled activities leading up to parallel test and deployment.
